Wake Up and Start Dreaming: Countdown to World Travel Starts Now!

As I sit down to write this very first blog post of Planet Emerson: World Travel, my body temperature begins to creep up, my heartbeat becomes erratic, and my fingers begin to tremble. “Why?!” you undoubtedly ask aloud, attracting the odd glances of others nearby. Why should a single blog post stir such a physiological response? Well, my dear reader, my committing to publish this blog post marks the beginning of a great journey. It is throwing down the gauntlet and asking YOU, an audience of readers, travelers, dreamers, and supporters, to hold me dead-to-rights accountable for my actions and make sure I follow through on what’ll be the greatest adventure I’ve ever undertaken.

Here it is:

On January 11th, 2016 I intend to leave the country, step out into the world with nothing in my possession but a backpack, minimal gear, my wits and a keen sense of adventure.

With NO set return date!

An open-ended odyssey, the likes of which I’ve never known, yet have often dreamed to do.

A choice.

A choice fulfill a lifelong dream.   A choice to do something that will put me on an inevitable collision course with a lot of tough decisions, huge unknowns, possible sacrifices, daring leaps of faith, possible mortal danger, and unparalleled trust in myself and others. There will need to be deep conversations ahead with friends, family, and loved ones, as well as many “points of no return” along the way.

What exactly needs to happen between now and January 11th, 2016 in order for this dream to become a reality? What conversations need to take place in my life? Where do my businesses need to be and how will they continue to operate remotely? What is the best minimalist travel packing gear list? What are the most compact, most budget friendly, most powerful travel technologies available for way-off-the-grid exploration around the globe, indefinitely? How does a minimalist packing list differ between men and women on the same journey? How much does it really cost to travel and live as a wandering nomad around the world? What travel hacking knowledge should I acquired before I go? What are the dangers? And…

How completely unrecognizable will my life look, from what it is now, when I do take that first step into the unknown?

I will have to cast off my own fears, doubts, insecurities, my known comforts, conventions, practicalities, expectations, and perceived limitations. Once I take that first step, I will simultaneously become willingly homeless and also a part of a growing community of intrepid explorers and life seekers out there who see the entire world as their office space, “unknown”: their home address, and worship the open road as their lover and soulmate.

Dare to live the life you have dreamed for yourself. Go forward and make your dreams come true.Ralph Waldo Emerson

I really wish I could tell you that I just decided to become a bum, you know, like Jules, free of responsibilities or concerns and just go walk the Earth like Caine in the Kung Fu movies. That would be so much easier than what I am about to do.

Presently, I am a voice over recording artist, writer and entrepreneur. I currently make most of my living as a voice recording artist for film, TV, radio, ad campaigns, and video games. I am a technology startup founder of SpherePlay and I’m the owner of a brand new wine label, Mana Story Wines. The tech startup and the wine label, at the time of this writing, are still in their infancy developmental stages.

So… here’s the completely insane commitment to which I’m about to hold myself:

I am going to become a digital nomad with every intention of STILL creating, developing, deploying, managing, and expanding my businesses remotely, from any nook and corner of the world in which I find myself. I will have to adapt, devise, and innovate ways to still be in business doing the things I love, recording voice over jobs, building and launching the SpherePlay virtual reality social network, producing and distributing deliciously fine California Pinot Noir via Mana Story Wines, and writing as much as humanly possible. I’m going to be playing for keeps! Keeps, I tell you! THIS game is not just about surviving. It is about THRIVING!!

I am going to sell everything that I own and whittle my life down to a backpack and a passport.

And maaaaybe… THIS hat…

I am going to research everything I can get my hands on in order to pull this off. I will draw on other people’s experiences who have come before me. I will blaze new paths into the wanderlust wilderness, hacking the system to maximize my travels around the world, on a budget! Tapping into a whole new world of personal possibilities, business resources, cultures, languages, individual freedoms, collective knowledge, and insights to still grow and propel my businesses forward while also expanding my own horizons, social circles and ways of thinking.

This is where YOU come in!

I will be reaching out to you along the way. I hope to engage you, inspire and motivate you to take great leaps into whatever adventures beckon you in life. To take that plunge with me, lose yourself in the moment, to own it, and to never let it go-oh-oh-oh!!! One shot, one opportunity… well… you know the lyrics.

What’s your dream?!?!

Perhaps, for you, it’s to travel the world as well, but, then again, maybe it’s not. Maybe it’s jumping into a new relationship, taking on a career change, moving away from home, going back to school, starting a family, creating your own business, or writing a book. Really ask yourself, what is that dream for you? Whatever your own daring adventure is that’s waiting in the wings for you, I want you to take this crazy ride with me and be inspired to seize it now, too!

I want to be inspired by YOU, your journeys, and learn from you too!

As we take this expedition on together, your questions, your comments, your stories, your emails, your video/audio messages to me, and your sharing of this information with others will all help me fortify my courage and keep me on this road less-traveled by… and THAT will make all the difference.

It’s definitely going to be a challenge.

Lessons will be learned.

Mistakes will be made.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.Mark Twain

Let’s do this! Come along with me on this one-way ticket rocket ride into the unknown on Planet Emerson: World Travel!
